RISEBA Announces admission for Summer School "FestivaL'and"
Students of architecture, urban design and related disciplines from all over the world are invited to RISEBA University International Summer School on the Ephemeral Architecture and Urban Design – “festival and”.

The summer school is devoted to the idea of the contemporary ephemeral architecture and urban design elements as catalysts for initially invisible but important processes of turns in the urban environments, perception, and usability of the city. Working in teams and workshops led by invited professionals as mentors you will develop the ideas and build the festival village in the very centre of Valmiera for VVTF visitors, locals and guests.
We invite you to get out of the auditorium, get acquainted with the varied cultural experience in Latvia and make new friends, but most importantly – apply your theoretical knowledge and develop the skills in constructing amazing ideas in scale 1:1.
We welcome undergraduate or postgraduate level students from foreign universities studying in the following fields: architecture, urbanism, landscape architecture, building construction and engineering, design and arts, scenography or similar.
Applicants must have finished at least one year of the undergraduate studies by the time the summer school starts.
We also welcome students from higher education institutions, universities, and vocational schools in Latvia.
Participants should have at least Advanced level of English language.
The summer school will be organized as the team workshops led by international and local tutors to work out the ideas on spatial arrangements for a festival village, develop the design proposals, and construction process.
The intense workshops will be enriched by inspiring lectures, guided excursions, visits to the local construction material factories, discussions, and feedback sessions, as well as cultural and leisure activities, concerts and performances, cinema screening, exciting parties together with the Valmiera Summer Theatre festival.
The VVTF has so far two years of experience in discovering the city spaces for theatre performance. By joining the forces with RISEBA the plans to generate more ambitious ideas and construct the festival village in the center of Valmiera has resulted in the cooperation to organize the summer school.
Parallel to summer school, Valmiera city celebration festival will take place and by adding the versatile culture and entertainment program we promise that your summer school WILL BE A FESTIVAL!
The summer school will be led by the international and local team of architects and designers, landscape specialists, artists and invited professionals: architect Ralf Lõoke (EE), Saalto architects, architect and set designer Didzis Jaunzems (LV), Didzis Jaunzems Architecture, landscape architect and urbanist Aigars Lauzis (LV), set designer and woodworker Rudolf Bekic (LV/AT), theatre director and set designer Reinis Suhanovs (LV), artist Andris Eglitis (LV) http://aeglitis.lv/w/ and others.
The full participation fee is EUR 711.
The fee covers accommodation in the student housing, catering (2 meals per day), workshops and discussion sessions, guest lectures, guided excursions and factory site visits, social programme and culture activities planned during the summer school.
The participants of the summer school have to cover travel expenses from the country of origin to the summer school location in Valmiera (Latvia) themselves. If necessary organizers will offer the pickup option in Riga and transfer to Valmiera.
There are scholarships available from State Education Development Agency of Latvia for international applicants* (application deadline: May 4, 2018). In total 10 scholarships will be granted to foreign applicants after evaluating the application, Curriculum vitae, and Motivation letter.
The final decision on granting scholarships will be made by the evaluation committee of the State Education Development Agency Republic of Latvia by May 15, 2018. You will be notified of the scholarship by organizers.

The call for international applications seeking for the scholarship is open from 1 March until 4 May 2018. If you are not eligible for the scholarship* please indicate that in the application form – you may apply for participation for a full fee (EUR 711).

Participants of the summer school will receive 3 ECTS and a certificate of participation will be awarded upon completion of the summer school program.
Valmiera is the largest city in the Vidzeme planning region. In the context of Latvia, it is considered as a development city with strong traditions of the production and industry, a considerable cultural heritage, and history.
Valmiera is one of the oldest cities in Latvia founded in about 1283. It is the former Hanseatic city, ruined by wartime of 20th century, and therefore missing the presence of the historical centre in the urban fabric. Valmiera is the administrative, educational, cultural and sports centre of the Vidzeme region. As it is a city with a true entrepreneurial spirit, Valmiera is also the centre for economic development of the region.

About Valmiera Summer Theater festival
Valmiera Summer Theater festival is a unique theatre event held annually in the urban environment, open air and non-traditional locations in Valmiera city.
The performances are exclusively produced for the festival by national and internationally renowned theatre professionals. The festival is in search of unusual places and original forms, which entertain, enrich, and provoke the festival visitors, locals of Valmiera and guests of the city. In addition to the theatre performances, the parallel interdisciplinary program expands the festival into the urban space of the city. In the summer of 2018 from Aug 3 till 5, the event will take place already the third time.

The festival is organized by Valmiera Drama theatre with the support from Valmiera City council.
