RISEBA students – 29th Winter Universiade participants in Krasnoyarsk
From 2 to 12 March the 29th Winter Universiade took place in Krasnoyarsk (Russia). In the competition Latvia was represented by 27 students from 13 universities in total, including 3 RISEBA students: Liene Bondare, Angelina Kučvaļska and Roberts Mamčics.
Liene Bondare represented Latvia in alpine skiing and participated in 4 disciplines: slalom, giant slalom, super G and alpine combined. The skier revealed that this competition posed more challenges than usual, as both she and her coach had to combat serious health problems, which prevented her from reaching the desired results. However, Liene remains motivated and ready to fight: “In the next Universiade in Switzerland in 2021 I’m going for the medals! A big thank you to RISEBA for supporting me and allowing me to make the long trip to Krasnoyarsk!”
For the first time Latvia was represented in figure skating in the Winter Universiade: the RISEBA student Angelina Kučvaļska participated in the event and achieved good results. Despite the fact that the figure skater had made a recent return to serious competitions after a long break, she managed to reach 10th place in the Universiade.
We are also happy about the RISEBA student Roberts Mamčics, who plays for KHL Dinamo Riga and was included in the Latvian student men’s ice hockey team that participated in the Universiade. The tough team fought tooth and nail and landed the 6th place.
In total, the students from Latvia participated in 5 events: ice hockey for men, alpine skiing, short track, figure skating and snowboarding.
58 countries and over 1700 of the best university athletes from all over the world were accredited to participate in the Universiade. The students competed in 11 winter sports: alpine skiing, biathlon, cross country skiing, curling, figure skating, ice hockey, short track, snowboarding, bandy, freestyle skiing and ski orienteering.
