MEDIA ART AND CREATIVE TECHNOLOGIES
The new doctoral programme “Media Art and Creative Technologies“, implemented in cooperation between two universities:
• Liepaja University, whose mission is to be an education, science, and innovation hub in Kurzeme, and
• RISEBA University of Applied Sciences, which aims to become an international business, creativity and innovation development center in Northern Europe.
The cooperation with Aalto University in Finland as well as with the Vilnius Academy of Arts, Nida Art Colony, creates a dynamic network in fostering innovation and highly thought academic residency exchange.
Program offers a high caliber academic platform as well as cutting edge infrastructure where qualified research-oriented professionals may fuse their professional expertise in symbiosis with advanced theories and critical analysis in the area of new media and interdisciplinary art, immersive and creative technologies in order to substantially impact culture, economy, politics and the social sphere both in Latvia and beyond.
The specific objective of the programme is to train competitive, research-oriented professionals who display a wide range of expertise in new technologies, audiovisual arts and digital cultural processes, who have acquired specific skills in creating works of art and innovative media products, and who are competitive in the labor market of arts, innovation technologies and creative industries, be it more traditional art and media production practices, cultural analytics, data visualization, or augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), Extended Reality (xR), artificial intelligence, and Volumetrics.
The development of the programme is based on the “National Development Plan 2030” and the “Latvian Sustainable Development Strategy 2030”, in which the interdisciplinarity of studies and the concept of creativity education are especially emphasized. In this strategy, education is treated both as the accumulation of specific competencies and qualifications as well as the development of critical thinking, creativity and cooperation skills, emotional and social intelligence. The study program “Media Art and Creative Technologies” corresponds to the fundamental principles of this strategy, as it is both interdisciplinary and is based on creativity and innovation.
